Japanese Tea Day

Japanese Tea Day

Hi guys, thank you for reading our blog and thank you for all your support, always!

October 1st is 日本茶の日 Japanese Tea Day. It is said to have originated from the day when Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the ruler of Japan, held a large tea ceremony at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto. These tea ceremonies were open to the public, not only for Daimyo (feudal lords), court nobles, and tea masters, but also for ordinary people and foreigners who were enthusiastic about the tea ceremony, regardless of social status. Expensive tea utensils were also exhibited. This day aims to reaffirm and promote the wonders of Japanese tea. Deeply rooted in Japan’s culture and daily life, Japanese tea is gaining attention for its diversity and health benefits.

History of Japanese Tea

The history of Japanese tea dates back to the Heian period, when it was initially imported from China. Over time, Japan developed its unique cultivation methods and drinking styles. In particular, during the Edo period, the culture of sencha (steeped green tea) flourished, becoming popular among the general public.

Types of Japanese Tea

There are various types of Japanese tea, with some of the most representative being:

  • Green Tea: The most common type, including sencha and gyokuro.

  • Genmaicha: A blend of green tea and roasted brown rice, offering a mellow taste.
  • Matcha: A powdered green tea, used in traditional tea ceremonies.
